Dr Con N. Aroney AM

MD, FRACP, FCSANZ

Dr Aroney is a founding member of Queensland Cardiology. He graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1979 and completed his cardiology training at Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside. Having gained a Heart Foundation Scholarship he worked as a clinical and research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, returning to Brisbane in 1989.

Dr Aroney served as Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Prince Charles Hospital from 1990-2005, where he founded the first comprehensive Chest Pain Assessment unit in Queensland.

In 1991 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Queensland for research in heart failure. He has served on numerous local and national committees including Chairman of the National Clinical Issues Committee of the Heart Foundation and a member of the Scientific Committee of the CSANZ. He has authored over 150 research papers, abstracts and book chapters and has continuing interest in clinical practice guidelines, clinical research and quality assessment programs in Cardiology.

In 2007 Dr Aroney was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to Cardiology and the Heart Foundation.

Currently Dr Aroney is the Director of Cardiology at Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, Chermside. He specializes in interventional cardiology with particular interests in coronary heart disease and the percutaneous treatment of structural heart disease (mitral balloon valvuloplasty, ASD closure, septal ablation and percutaneous aortic valve implantation).

Dr Roderick Chua

Dr Roderick Chua is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Heart
Failure Specialist.
Dr Chua is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and
Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a
member of the Heart Valve Team at the St Vincent’s Private Hospital
Northside. He is the medical liaison for the Cardiac Rehabilitation
programme at St Vincent’s.
Dr Chua graduated from the University of Sydney and completed his
basic physician’s training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.
He became a fellow to the Heart/Lung Transplant Unit at St Vincent’s
Hospital, Sydney in 2003 and was involved closely with the
management of end-stage heart failure patients, transplantation
medicine and post-cardiac transplant care. He completed his
interventional fellowship at the very busy cardiology unit of the
Westmead Hospital, Sydney in 2004.
In 2005, Dr Chua was appointed as a staff specialist cardiologist at St
Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and set up practice at the Sydney Adventist,
Baulkham Hills Private and Mater Hospitals in Sydney. He arrived at the
Prince Charles Hospital in 2006 and became a director of Queensland
Cardiology the following year.
Dr Chua performs a full range of coronary interventional procedures and
has a special interest in CT coronary angiography His coronary
interventions are mostly done via radial artery access. He regularly
reports on CTCA studies performed at Lumus Radiology, St Vincent’s
Northside. He personally supervises both Exercise and Dobutamine
stress Echocardiography examinations in his rooms at Queensland
Cardiology.
He has admitting and procedural rights at the St Vincent’s Private
Hospital Northside, Chermside and the St Andrew’s War Memorial
hospital, Spring Hill. He is regularly on-call for general cardiology
admissions and for the primary angioplasty and acute chest pain
services at both hospitals.
He consults regularly at the offices of Queensland Cardiology, St
Vincent’s Northside Medical Centre, the North Lakes Specialist Medical
Centre, North Lakes and at Northside Cardiology Care, Peninsula
Private Specialists Centre, Kippa Ring.

He is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Dr Emma Ivens

MB, BS, FRACP

Dr Emma Ivens graduated from Monash University in 1997 with first class honours and completed her physician and cardiology training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Dr Ivens has also completed a post graduate echocardiography fellowship at the Prince Charles Hospital, University of Queensland, followed by a further year of specialized training in advanced echocardiology at St Paul’s Hospital, University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada.

On her return to Australia in 2007, she joined Queensland Cardiology at the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital in Brisbane and is also employed as a VMO specialist at the Prince Charles Hospital. She is widely published in the areas of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, complex aortic pathology, pericardial disease and procedural echocardiology including ASD/PFO device closure and in the emerging area of percutaneous heart valves.

Dr Ivens is actively involved in cardiac research and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland. She is available for all types of cardiology consultations, stress testing, stress echocardiography, transthoracic echocardiography and transoesophageal echocardiography.

Dr Martin Masterson

MB, BCH, FRACP, FACC

Martin graduated in Medicine from the National University of Ireland, University College Galway in 1975. He completed his internship and post graduate medical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital from 1976-1979 and at Sir Charles Gardner Hospital in Perth WA from 1980-1981.

He trained in Cardiology at Royal Newcastle Hospital, Newcastle, NSW (1982), Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, NSW (1983) and at St Thomas’s Hospital London, UK (1984). Dr Masterson completed his Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Ohio, USA from 1985 – 1988.

He was the director of Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside from 1988 – 2000. He is a founding member of Queesland Cardiology.

He is a VMO at St Andrews War Memorial Hospital, Brisbane and the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, Chermside.

Dr Masterson is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, the Australian and New Zealand Cardiac Society and the American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the AMA and Heart Rhythm Society. His current interests include curing Atrial Fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias, managing syncope, pacemakers and defibrillators.

Dr Paul Timothy McEniery

MBBS, FCSANZ, FSCAI, FACC, FRACP.

Dr McEniery graduated from Medicine at the University of Queensland with First Class Honors in 1975. He then completed his Cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. He later conducted hypertension research at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney.

Dr McEniery worked in Invasive Cardiology and underwent Angioplasty training at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, before returning to Brisbane to work at Prince Charles Hospital until 2003. Dr McEniery has been an active member of Queensland Cardiology as an Associate since inception and as a partner from 2008.

Dr McEniery specializes in Invasive Coronary Angiography, Stent implantation and Clinical Cardiology. He attends St Andrew’s Hospital, Spring Hill, and Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, Chermside.

Dr McEniery’s current interests include invasive Coronary Angiography and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention. His professional affiliations include Cardiac Society of Australia, American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.

Dr Lisa A. Walters

Senior Lecturer in Medicine, University of Queensland.

Dr Lisa Walters is a founding member of Queensland Cardiology.

Since graduating in Medicine from the University of Queensland she completed her cardiology training at the Royal Brisbane and Prince Charles Hospitals, Brisbane. Her post-graduate training includes fellowships in both echocardiography at the University of California, San Francisco and Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.

Dr Walters now bases her practice in general cardiology and echocardiography at the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital and visits the Prince Charles Hospital.

Prof Darren Walters

MBBS, MPHIL, FRACP, FCSANZ, FSCAI

Senior Lecturer in Medicine, University of Queensland.

Prof Darren Walters is a structural interventional Cardiologist and has been one of the pioneers of structural interventions in Australia such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement and percutaneous mitral valve repair and replacement.

He is Director of Cardiology at The Prince Charles Hospital and Visiting Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Brisbane (Holy Spirit Northside Hospital).

He has previous experience as Executive Director of both The Prince Charles and the Royal Brisbane Hospitals. He was previously Executive Director of the Heart and Lung Services of Metro North Health service incorporating five hospitals. He is a graduate of the University of Queensland and trained at The Royal Brisbane Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital and then as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Interventional Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland. He has held many clinical leadership roles including past Chair of the Interventional Working Group of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, deputy Chair of the Advanced Training Committee in Cardiology, Chair of the TAVI ACOR Registry and the Cardiac Society representative to the Australian Resuscitation Council. He has served a number of committees and professional service roles within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the International Liaison Committee On resuscitation task force on ACS-myocardial infarction.

His interests include innovative technologies, clinical and translational research. He has been involved in International prospective randomised clinical trials and investigator driven translational research and is the author of more than 200 peer reviewed papers, abstracts, international guidelines and book chapters. As an invited expert, he has been a guest speaker in more than half a dozen countries overseas including the USA, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and China.

Professor Walters also visits Mater Hospital at Rockhampton each month.

Dr Nicholas Aroney

Dr Nicholas Aroney is a Queensland born, bred and educated Interventional and Structural Cardiologist.

Nick achieved First Class Honours in his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Griffith University in 2011. He achieved a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Adult Cardiology after appointments at the Royal Brisbane and Prince Charles Hospitals. Following this, he performed a two year coronary and structural fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital. In 2020-21, Nick was the Structural Heart Fellow at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, United Kingdom, a worldwide centre of excellence in TAVI, adult structural and adult congenital heart procedures. Whilst at St Thomas’, Nick was involved with international trials and first-in-man procedures.

Nick’s clinical interest and expertise is the management of aortic stenosis, acute coronary syndromes, structural heart disease, cardiac 3D modelling and risk factor modification. He has published manuscripts and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and presents regularly at national and international conferences.

Nick performs coronary and structural interventions including; percutaneous coronary intervention (stents), transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and adult congenital interventions (PFO, ASD). He is a nationally accredited TAVI practitioner.

Dr Nicholas Aroney works from the St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, Mater Public and Mater Private Hospital’s South Brisbane. He is a proud member of Heart of Australia, providing cardiac services to regional Queensland and is an associate lecturer for The University of Queensland.

Dr Stephen Tomlinson

MBBS, MPHIL, FRACP

Dr Stephen Tomlinson is a general cardiologist with advanced training in echocardiography. He is an expert in non-invasive evaluation of chest pain, breathlessness, arrhythmia, and valvular heart disease.

Dr Tomlinson graduated from Bond University in 2011 with the Vice Chancellor’s award for academic excellence. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Adult Cardiology in 2019 after appointments at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Prince Charles Hospital. He performed a two-year echocardiography fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital before undertaking further subspecialty training in valvular and structural heart disease at the world-renowned Columbia Structural Heart and Valve Centre at New-York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr Tomlinson has completed a Master’s degree in medical research in which he pioneered novel techniques for non-invasive assessment of heart failure. He has published multiple peer-reviewed papers and regularly lectures at local and international conferences. Dr. Tomlinson is a dedicated clinician who is at the forefront of his field and is a passionate advocate for his patients care.
